Get kindling, paper or a commercial fire starting stick to start your fire. Your fire starter should be dry and burn easily with the strike of a match or a lighter. Make sure that you have a good lighter or box of dry matches on hand. Keep your matches in a sealable plastic bag when camping to stop them from getting wet. Also, gather some medium and larger pieces of dry wood to use later on in your fire.
Determine where you are going to build the fire. Find a location that is not under the direct cover of trees.
Dig the fire spot 3-4 inches into the ground and place a circle of rocks or some other barrier around it.
Make a Tepee shape with the large wood pieces. Place your fire starter underneath the wood and ensure that your fire has plenty of breathing room. Light the fire starter with matches or a lighter once you have built a good base.
Add your medium sized wood pieces to the fire, but leave room for it to breathe. Add bigger pieces of wood once your medium sized wood pieces are burning.
