How to Landscape a Red Brick Home

Place hedges or shrubs around the foundation to complement the brick and soften the appearance of the home. Create depth in the landscape design and plant low-profile shrubs or flowers in the center of the yard and gradually get larger as you move out across the yard. Boxwood hedges, rosemary and creeping yew all complement the deep red tones of the bricks, while the rust tones of a burning bush offer a splash of color amid green foliage.

Spread mulch or wood chips in the flowerbeds to add a different texture to the yard. Fill flowerbeds with three different colors to create a complementary palette for the yard, such as blue, yellow and white, which creates an analogous combination, or choose green and yellow plants to contrast with red brick. Camellia, geranium and lobelia provide a complementary color palette to the home.

Line the driveway or walkway with perennials in yellow or white. Chrysanthemum, lupines and iris all come in white and yellow, which stand out against brick. Add flowers in the same color scheme to containers and place up the porch steps or around the patio to draw the eye up to the front door from the curb.

Incorporate small trees around the corners of the home to offer privacy and soften the home's appearance. Choose small, ornamental varieties such as Japanese maple, cherry, poplar or myrtle. Trees that stay green year-round include evergreens or pine varieties.

Cover fences or walls with flowering vines such as clematis or jasmine, or choose creeping fig or ivy if you prefer only foliage. Place an arbor or trellis in the yard and cover it with a flowering vine such as wisteria or jasmine to provide vertical interest in the yard, as well as fragrance.
