Landscaping Ideas for a White Brick House

A white brick house serves as a backdrop for endless possibilities in landscape design. Colorful flowers, shrubs and trees all stand out against the home to enhance curb appeal and create depth in the landscape. Keep a white home from appearing too plain by incorporating a variety of landscaping design elements into the yard.
  1. Flowers

    • Flowers add color to the landscape, and the multitude of options allows you to fill in any part of the yard, regardless of varying soil conditions or sun exposure. Flowerbeds against the foundation of the home draw your eye from the curb all the way up to the entryway, while beds that line driveways and walkways provide elegant curb appeal in any yard. Add a splash of color to the home and surrounding landscape with bright flowers such as bergenias, geranium, phlox or bellis. For a cool color palette in the yard, select from flowers such as agapanthus, iris, lavender or lupines.

    Shrubs

    • Shrubs are ideal to place anywhere in the landscape to complement surrounding flowers and trees. Shrubs that are taller than surrounding flowers provide the landscape with vertical height, which complements the exterior of the home. Plant shrubs along a foundation, driveway or walkway, and plant flowers directly in front of the shrubs for variation in height. Choose colorful shrubs such as red barberry, rhododendron, butterfly brush or burning bush to stand out against a white home. Ornamental grass adds a whimsical style to any home, so choose varieties such as mondo grass, pink muhly grass or red fountain grass for additional color.

    Trees

    • Trees offer shade and privacy to the home, and depending on the variety you choose, add color to the landscape. Soften the look of the home and plant dwarf varieties around each corner of the house. Ideal trees to use around the home include miniature poplar, crape myrtle, dogwood, cherry and magnolia. Around property lines, increase privacy with cypress, poplar or pine trees.

    Porch

    • The porch is a focal point of the yard and draws the eye from the curb to the front door. Add color to the porch with flowers or shrubs in containers placed up the steps leading to the front door or on either side of the entryway. Hanging baskets filled with colorful flowers brighten up the porch and add color to the entryway. Alongside a wall, add a trellis with a flowering vine such as wisteria or trumpet vine to add color to the exterior and offer fragrance to the porch area.
