How to Troubleshoot a Buzzing in Low Voltage Lighting

Low-voltage lighting is used for brightening pathways and patios, and highlighting landscapes. Electric or magnetic transformers are used to power the fixtures. Buzzing, or humming noises, are a common problem. However, transformer positives include its small size, low cost, and longevity. You can still have it all when it comes to noise-free low voltage lighting. Drastically reduce the buzz by installing a dimming coil on your transformer.

Instructions

  1. Dimming Coil Installation for a Remote Transformer

    • 1

Remove the screws that hold the transformer cover in place and then remove the transformer cover.

    • 2

Insert the dimming coil inside the transformer and then attach one of the dimming coil wires to a black transformer wire with a wire nut.

    • 3

Connect the other dimming coil wire to the hot power wire. Based on your remote transformer's make and model, additional steps may be required. Refer to the owner's manual to finish the installation for your specific type of transformer.

Dimming Coil Installation for a Recessed Transformer

    • 4

Insert the dimming coil inside the transformer.

    • 5

Locate the line voltage terminal block inside the recessed transformer and loosen the screw slightly.

    • 6

Insert any one of the two dimming coil wires into the terminal block and then re-tighten the screw.

    • 7

Connect the remaining dimming coil wire to the hot power wire. Based on your recessed transformer's make and model, additional steps may be required. Refer to the owner's manual to finish the installation for your specific type of transformer.
