How to Get Rid of Water Erosion

Erosion occurs when rain, wind and other weathering wears soil away. The most common problem for the home owner is rain that channels down exposed soil causing gullies and undercutting land. Erosion can be dangerous as well as ugly. If you have erosion problems on your property, here are some suggestions to deal with the problem.

Instructions

Examine the area to determine where the water is coming from that is causing the erosion. Look for areas where rain and runoff pool together to form large amounts of water. Identify with flag markers those areas where the water seems to run through the affected zone (i.e. gullies, erosion tracks, puddles, rivulets).

Purchase extra soil and transport it by wheelbarrow and shovel to the areas marked that are lower than surrounding areas. Pack the added dirt in so it compacts and forms a thick fill to the cavity being filled. Continue this process until all the lower areas are filled in with new dirt. Add hay where necessary to bind the dirt together as you create filled-in areas. Use hay bales as a barrier where running water such as a creek or stream is causing expanding erosion beyond the initial water running area.

Plan drainage lines to pull water away from areas now filled so the water runoff doesn't build up again and destroy your new efforts. Install the drainage by first digging ditches with a ditch-digger machine (you can rent one from a local big-box hardware store or equipment rental vendor). Add perforated drainage pipe at the bottom, gravel below, around and above the pipe until reaching surface level. Direct the piping installed to main drainage point that sends the runoff water away from the affected zone.

Apply water to the treated area and monitor the performance of your change. Check to make sure the water is indeed running and draining where desired. Make changes as necessary to fix identified problems.
