Typical Ground Roll Baler

• The typical ground roll baler is one type of baler. The typical ground roll baler rolls on the ground on top of the incoming hay. It rolls bales off at the density of 12 lbs. per cubic foot. The bales created are relatively low density with irregular surfaces. These balers are least efficient when the lines of hay being baled are wet and irregular in volume.

Expandable Chamber Baler

• Expandable chamber balers are used to create denser bales with more efficient output. These balers can produce 6 to 20 tons of baled hay an hour. They are mostly used for when hay distribution is large and uniform and they pick up hay best when guided over an extended weave pattern.

Carried Fixed Chamber Baler

• Uniform hay distribution over a field is not as important to the successful use of carried fixed chamber balers. Guiding the baler in a weaving pattern is unnecessary as the hay is able to tumble loosely in its larger chamber. This baler uses hydraulic pressure instead of tension applied by belts and chains to form the bales' shape. Carried fixed chamber balers produce 4 to 18 tons of baled hay an hour.

Smaller Baler

• Smaller balers produce bales of hay that are rectangular instead of round. These smaller, rectangular bales are desirable because they typically weigh between 40 and 60 lbs. and can be transported and arranged by manpower alone. They are most useful on smaller farms with fewer livestock.
