How to Install Playground Turf in Washington

Turf is a type of grass that is installed on a lawn, rather than grown. Pieces of the turf are held together by the root system until they can be lifted and installed on the ground. When opening up or restoring a playground, turf can be favored over grass seed because it gives the children an instant lawn to play on. When installing playground turf in Washington, there are some grass growing tips that should be kept in mind.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait until the right time of year in Washington to fertilize the soil and start growing grass. This would be in November, April, June or September. These are the four months of the year when fertilizer should be applied to Washington lawns.

    • 2

Pour on an few inches of top soil over the dirt on the playground. Spread with a landscaping rake.

    • 3

Use a rototiller to mix the top soil with the existing dirt. Till to a depth of 6 inches.

    • 4

Fill a lawn roller about a third of the way with water and roll it over the dirt to create an even, compacted surface for the turf. You want the soil to be compacted so that your foot leaves about a 1/2 inch indentation and no more.

    • 5

Apply fertilizer to the compacted dirt. In Washington, you should use one pound of nitrogen fertilizer for every 1,000 square feet of space to grow the healthiest turf. Apply this amount of fertilizer during the recommended months. Water the fertilized area.

    • 6

Sharpen a mason's trowel with a metal file and use it to cut any squares of turf that need to be fitted on the playground, such as around the edges of the yard.

    • 7

Set each piece of turf in place on the playground one at a time. Fit it in snugly using the trowel. Then, saturate the turf piece with water. Continue this process for the entire Washington playground.
