How to Landscape Homes With Tall Concrete Retaining Walls

A concrete retaining wall that is built on your property is likely serving an important function. Retaining walls around a home are usually built to hold back a vertical length of soil, or they could be keeping water from damaging your property during flood season. Either way, a large concrete wall can make landscaping a bit more of a challenge, but with the right techniques, your retaining wall can be an attractive part of your home rather than an eyesore.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the area behind the retaining wall with colored crushed stone. Crushed stone can have a red, purple, blue, green or brown tint, which can add to the beauty of your landscaping.

    • 2

Add cap blocks to the retaining wall if it doesn't already have them. The cap blocks help make the wall itself look more attractive, and can be added with concrete adhesive alone.

    • 3

Plant a garden on the area above the retaining wall. This can take away from the stagnant, harsh appearance that the wall can create.

    • 4

Add bushes beneath the retaining wall. On the inside of the wall, you can actually cover up some of the concrete with beautiful bushes. These can be simple greenery, or you can choose bushes that bloom for added color and depth.

    • 5

Choose other landscaping features that complement the retaining wall. For example, a brick walkway might clash with a gray wall, but a stone pathway could go with it nicely.
