High Traffic Landscaping

Very few things show off a home better than a well-landscaped lawn. While the aesthetic appeal must be a prime consideration in landscaping, special attention is needed for high traffic areas. With proper selection of grasses, shrubs and other plants, any lawn can highlight your real estate investment.
  1. Grass

    • Grass forms the basis of any lawn, and there are several varieties that do well in high traffic areas. While Bermuda grass does well in warm climates and forms a thick carpet, it is also very invasive and can take over flower beds as well as borders. Bluegrass is a popular choice for high traffic areas in cool climates and stays a rich green throughout the growing season. While rye grass does not do well in dry climates, it greens up rapidly and seems to be impact resistant. Fescue is another popular choice that does well in most climates.

    Shrubs

    • Not only can shrubs provide the necessary accents to a lawn, they can also change the flow of lawn traffic and help transfer it to less traveled areas. However, if the household is home to one or more dogs, avoid planting shrubs along the fence line. Dogs tend to patrol the margins of a fenced yard and can trample most plants in their way. If shrubs must be planted in this area, select a variety with branches that are higher off the ground. This will allow the dogs to pass under the branches with out destroying the plant.

    Mulch

    • Although a good mulch can keep moisture in a soil, it can also be used in high traffic areas. Not only will the mulch protect the ground and keep it from becoming muddy during wet periods, it can also provide a pleasing appearance when used around shrubs and other plants. Since wood mulches come in a variety of colors, select one that works well for your area.

    Rocks

    • Don't overlook using rocks when landscaping high traffic areas. Not only will rocks provide a way to keep high traffic areas from becoming a sea of mud, they can also enhance your yard with a variety of colors and shapes. Flagstone and paving bricks in particular can highlight areas of your yard while protecting them from undesirable traffic. Don't forget to experiment with different rock types to provide aesthetic appeal to a given area.
