How to Install a Golf Green in Your Backyard

Excelling at a particular sport takes a great deal of effort and practice. Golf is no exception. You can spend countless hours commuting to your local golf course if you have time, but that is not always necessary. Practice at home by taking the time to build your own putting green. This requires only the space to place the golf green and basic landscaping materials. You will never have to go another day without practicing your skills if you don't want to.

Instructions

    • 1

Survey your yard and decide on a location to place your golf green. Focus on an area where the ground is as level as possible and large enough for the size of green that you have in mind. Design your green based on the skills that you want to develop. For example, some golf players may want to build a green with a slight slope to practice with downhill speed and uphill putting. Plan your green placement based on your needs.

    • 2

Paint an outline with spray paint rated for landscaping, based on the planned shape and size of green that you plan to build.

    • 3

Dig up 4 inches of soil where you plan to build the green, using a shovel and hoe. Pack the ground firmly with a metal tamp to ensure that it is as level as possible.

    • 4

Promote proper drainage by adding 2 inches of crushed gravel to the fill half of the 4 inches that you previously removed. Pack the gravel down with a metal tamp.

    • 5

Add 1 inch of stone dust over the gravel and pack it down with a tamp, as well, to hold the gravel together.

    • 6

Dig a hole with a post hole digger or golf hole cup cutter and insert your cup into the hole.

    • 7

Lay either artificial turf or sod over the base that you have created and cut around the hole and cup. Secure the turf in place with sod staples.
