How to Landscape With Rock Islands

When you think about landscaping the area around your home, you probably picture trees, bushes, shrubs and flowers. But you can also use rocks to build beauty and drama into your front and back yard landscape. Building a rock island is an effective way to hide unsightly elements in your landscape and emphasize other items.

      Examine your current landscape to determine the best places to put your rock islands. Rock islands work well in places where grass is difficult to trim, like around your mailbox and flagpole. A rock island is also a good choice for any parts of your landscape where grass is difficult to grow, and for areas where the grass is sparse or dead.

      Walk around your front and back yards and look for things that could be considered eyesores. These could include necessary but unsightly things such as exterior piping, drainage ditches and drain pipes. You can use rock islands to hide these unsightly parts of your landscape.

      Shop around at local garden centers to see what types of landscaping rocks are available. Choose the types of rocks that best fit your existing landscape and the overall color scheme of your home.

      Create a rock island around your mailbox with an assortment of rocks in various sizes, shapes and colors. Piling some larger rocks up around the base of your mailbox can give it extra strength and stability, especially during the winter months. Use smaller stones to decorate the area around the mailbox.

      Use a rock island around your flagpole to make the area look more attractive and appealing to the eye. If your flagpole does not currently have a ring around it, use an assortment of large rocks in various shapes to create a natural barrier. Fill in the interior with smaller stones in an assortment of colors and sizes.

      Build natural stone steps around your outdoor pond. Use large flat rocks set into the ground to create a natural walkway you can use to clean and maintain the pond, or just enjoy it. Build rock islands around the pond to give it a lusher and more natural appearance.
