How to Use a Grubbing Hoe on a Caterpillar

Grubber implements can be attached to Caterpillar bulldozers to clear a patch of land of weeds, including shrubs and small trees such as mesquite. Grubbing hoes can clear in a few hours what would take weeks to do by hand. Grubbing hoe attachments for Caterpillars can be mounted to the front or rear of the machine, depending on what model you have. However, in general, a grubbing hoe that attaches to the machine's front is easier to steer and operate.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach your grubbing hoe to the Caterpillar. You may need to use wooden blocks to position the attachment at the right level so that it can be connected to your bulldozer.

    • 2

Mark any trees or areas that should not be grubbed with spray paint. This is especially important if someone unfamiliar with your land will be operating the grubber.

    • 3

Drive the Caterpillar into the area to be grubbed. Once you have entered the area to be cleared, press the grubbing hoe into the ground while moving forward slowly. Depending on your model of Caterpillar, there will be a lever that will adjust the depth of the grubbing attachment. Additionally, the controls for lowering the attachment will vary depending on whether you are using a front- or rear-mounted attachment. The distance you want to penetrate will depend on the type of plants you are clearing. For small weeds and grasses, the hoe depth can be shallow. For larger shrubs and trees, you may need to penetrate as deeply as 6 inches or 1 foot.
