How to Calculate Cut Sheets for Storm Sewer Construction

Before you start building the foundation for your home or a new driveway, take some time to consider how rainwater will collect and be removed from your property. Your municipality can build storm sewers that remove this water, but you can construct one yourself for your own property out of cut sheets of metal or even plastic. Your first step to installing a storm sewer is determining the dimensions of the piping.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of cut sheeting you'll need for the storm sewer. Take the measurement from the location of the drain to the exit point.

    • 2

Determine if you'll be using more than one cut sheet. Add approximately 6 inches per sheet to the overall length determined in Step 1 as the pipes will overlap when fitting them together with O-rings. For example, if you measured a length of 30 feet in Step 1 but you have to use four cut sheets, the actual total length of cut sheets is 32 feet.

    • 3

Determine if the storm sewer piping will be going under your driveway.

    • 4

Use cut sheets that will have a minimum diameter of 21 inches when formed into piping and a thickness of 0.064 inches if they will be used under your driveway.

    • 5

Use cut sheets that will have a minimum diameter of 15 inches when formed into piping and a thickness of 0.064 inches if they will won't be used under your driveway.
