How to Become Certified to Use a Chainsaw

Chainsaws are a useful and powerful landscaping tool for cutting through wood. If you have a project that requires the use of a chainsaw, you may or may not need certification depending on the job and location. For example, cutting anything in a national park with a chainsaw requires both certification and permission. Cutting down a tree in your yard does not. If you have not been properly instructed in chainsaw use, then taking a certification class is always wise because it will show you proper technique and safety. Some agencies that grant certification include the Professional Trailbuilder's Association, the United States Forest Service, the Forest Industry Safety & Training Alliance and the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association.

Attend class, participate and meet all the requirements of certification. Usually courses are held over a two-day period that involve both indoor and outdoor training. Indoor classes involve the study of general chainsaw use procedures, safety features, saw chain and saw tooth filing, maintenance, personal protective equipment and proper use. Outside class lets students operate their saws at boring and bucking stations. You will learn more about safety, proper ergonomics and positioning, felling tools, wedge use and reactive forces. Expect outside work that may involve demonstrated the proper technique and performance of dropping trees. Once all time and performance criteria are met, you will be officially certified to use a chainsaw.
