How to Landscape With Gravel and Ceramic Pots

Container gardens are an ideal solution for small lots and where reducing turf and low maintenance are issues. A wide array of styles of ceramic and clay containers are available in a variety of interesting glazes and shapes to suit different design themes. Gravel is also versatile and can take on geometric or organic forms. Containers filled abundantly with plants are striking with a simple gravel setting. Patio stones provide a stable base for the containers and add visual interest to the ground plane. Choose a location easily viewed from an outdoor seating area or window.

Prepare a level area for the gravel base. Excavate to the required depth for 2 to 4 inches of gravel and slope slightly away from structures for drainage. Compact with a roller or tamper. Install edging to contain the gravel. Add the decorative gravel and rake evenly to the edges.

Install several patio stones in a pattern that complements the house architecture and landscape theme. Allow at least 6 inches between the stones. Level the stones.

    • 3

Place container pots on the stones. Fill the containers with planting mix.

Plant the containers with annual flowers, grasses or perennials to preference. Choose for foliage, color and texture. Use trailing plants mixed with various heights of plants. Plant densely, fitting as many plants as possible into the container, spaced at 4 inches or less.
