How to Burn Freshly Cut Wood

Clearing lots is common when purchasing new property and often times much of the lumber is burned to avoid removal costs. Burning freshly cut lumber is not difficult, but it will require strategy in the beginning stages of building your wood pile to burn. Diesel fuel is required for this and preferred over gasoline because it burns slower. Fresh wood contains a lot of moisture. It will burn slower and at a lower temperature. Wood like this is never burned in wood stoves.

Instructions

    • 1

Stack the smallest pieces of your freshly cut wood in a pile that resembles a cone-shape. Pour one gallon of diesel fuel over the pile and let it soak while you stack the rest of the wood.

    • 2

Place the larger pieces of freshly cut wood on top of the smaller pile, keeping the cone-shape. The largest pieces of wood should be on the outside of the pile. Pour the rest of the diesel fuel on top of the pile.

    • 3

Light the diesel fuel and stand back. Keep control of the fire using your hose. Spray the fire down if it starts to get out of control. Freshly cut lumber doesn't burn hot, and diesel fuel isn't nearly as volatile as gasoline.
