How to Calculate a Circular Driveway

A circular driveway adds an aesthetically pleasing touch to the front of your home. Some circular drives take it a step further with a centerpiece such as a tree or flower bed. If so, when you are calculating the area you need to account for the area taken up by the centerpiece. You may need to calculate the area of your circular driveway if you are putting down new gravel or laying new pavement. The area is typically measured in square feet.

  Measure the distance from the center of the driveway to the outer edge of the driveway. If you have something in the middle, such as a tree, measure the distance from the center to the point where the pavement starts.

  Multiply the distance from the center of the driveway to the outer edge by itself and 3.14 to find the area of the circle. If you have nothing in the middle, this is the area of the driveway. For example, if the distance equals 15 feet, multiply 15 by 15 by 3.14 to get 706.5 square feet.

  Multiply the distance from the center of the driveway to the start of the pavement by itself and 3.14 to find the area of the circle that will be inside the driveway. For example, if the distance equals 5 feet, multiply 5 by 5 by 3.14 to get 78.5 square feet.

  Subtract the area of the center from the total area to find the area of the circular driveway. In this example, subtract 78.5 from 706.5 to find the area of the driveway equals 628 square feet.
