Landscaping Plans for Side Entrances

A strong landscape plan should carry the design theme to the secondary areas, linking the site by repeating materials, ensuring comfortable walkways and paying attention to the visual and functional environment. The side entrance is still frequently used and should reflect the character and quality of the rest of the landscape. Some site layouts allow imaginative treatments with patios and special features that enhance the experience of coming home.
  1. Side Entrance

    • The side entrance typically is the family-and-friends entrance, which might mean it's used more than the front door. The journey to the side entrance may be a narrow side yard, utilitarian in character. Don't skimp on quality of construction or detailing for the side yard. Maintain a sense of entrance and arrival for the side entrance, but on a smaller, more intimate scale. A smaller version of the front entrance might be appropriate, but add a few unique elements.

    Side-Entrance Walkway

    • Walkways to the side entrance are defined as secondary walks. Primary walkways are generously scaled and usually constructed of quality materials. Secondary walks are narrower, but functional and easy to negotiate. Secondary walkways are usually 2 to 3 feet wide and paved. Using the same paving material, but narrowing the walkway, signals the transition to the side entrance. Widen the walkway at the side entrance and allow for a comfortable landing if steps are necessary.

    Planting and Fences

    • Consider the environment around the walkway to the side entrance. Gardeners may take advantage of the available space to plant shade-tolerant species. Fencing can add more visual interest, as well as privacy. Widening the walkway to the fence instead of planting creates a courtyard effect. Lattice details and color choices can enliven the setting and provide support for hanging baskets of plants. Take care that landscaping respects drainage; swales are often located in the side yard.

    Driveways

    • Driveways are sometimes extended to the side entrance to take advantage of a layout with a wider side yard. Differentiate between the driveway and the access to the side entrance to create a more pleasant and comfortable environment. One option is to separate the driveway from the side entrance with a fence or border of landscaping. Install a walkway constructed of different material from the driveway. Widen it to form a patio around the side entrance to add interest and additional outdoor space.
