Landscaping for a Symmetrical Front Porch Entrance

A symmetrical front porch design can be accented with landscaping that helps to maintain a balanced look. Architectural styles such as colonial homes are based on symmetry in the front and back of the house. If you have a symmetrical house, then you can improve your curb appeal by using landscaping elements that work with the porch symmetry.
  1. Staggered Blooms

    • You can add a dynamic look to your symmetrical front porch landscaping by working with flowers that bloom at various times in your area. Plants such as evergreen trees and shrubs maintain their color all year long, but they do not offer much in the way of accent colors to your landscaping. Remember to balance each side to maintain symmetry.

    Walkway

    • One way to add color is to include plants on either side of the walkway that leads to your porch. Rather than putting in one type of plant, or one color, go for a multicolored look by layering rows of plants. Whatever mix you create on the left side of the walkway will have to be replicated on the right side to maintain balance.

    Mature Plants

    • If you do not know how the mature plant will look after it is in bloom, then your symmetrical design can be compromised. For example, some vine plants grow faster than others and create an unbalanced look to your front porch. Discuss your design plans with the experts at your local nursery and be sure to compare pictures of mature plants before including them in your landscaping.

    Lighting

    • Landscape lighting can be used to accent the highlights of your landscaping such as trees, a flower garden or a fountain. But you can also use lighting to highlight the symmetrical nature of your porch landscaping design. Place lights on each side of your porch features in a symmetrical fashion to enhance the balance in your yard -- even at night.
