How to Landscape Around a Brick Ranch

Ranch-style houses, also called ranchers, are single story homes with long, low roofs. They may have siding from nearly any material, including brick. When landscaping around brick ranches, remember the brick's color needs consideration. The warmth of the red brick is an important part of the home and should be accentuated. Help your plans by mapping out your landscaping ideas on paper first and changing the arrangements to see what you like best.

Create a backdrop to the landscape by accenting the brick walls with greenery. Frame windows with tall shrubs to add greenery and depth to the decor. Add short bushes between the shrubs, under the windows. Choose bushes that have white subtle flowers so they won't contrast with the red brick.

Install brick pavers for any paths or driveways. This makes the brick on the house stand out. Warmth and unity are also added to the look by making the brick continuous. Build a path that runs through the yard and leads to the front door if you don't already have one. If your yard is too small, you can connect a path from the driveway to the door.

Plant a tree in the yard, away from the house. Choose a deciduous tree that flowers to add color and fragrance to the yard. Deciduous trees also help with heating and cooling homes because they allow the sun through in the colder months but the leaves block the sun in the warmer months.

Erect a fence or plant a hedge to create a border around the yard. Use brick for fencing or evergreen shrubs for hedges. Brick enforces continuity in the landscape while the greenery in a hedge will complement the warm red brick. Try boxwood shrubs for an easy-to-grow, evergreen hedge.
