Curbside Mailbox Ideas

You might consider your mailbox as simply a place to send and receive mail, but there are many things you can do to improve the appearance of your curbside mailbox. Because your mailbox is situated at your curb, it can become a focal point in your front yard. Improving the appearance of your mailbox, and the surrounding area, also can increase the curb appeal of your home.
  1. Flower Garden

    • Planting flowers is a simple way to improve the appearance of the ground surrounding your curbside mailbox. Choose a variety of coordinating colors in several heights to create an appealing display. Coneflowers, dianthus, daisies, snapdragons, pansies and petunias all are choices that work well together. Select flowers based on how much sun your mailbox area gets. If it gets no shade during the day, opt for full-sun varieties. If your mailbox is in a shady spot, choose flowers that tolerate partial shade. Plant the taller flowers toward the back of your mailbox area and the shorter ones in the front.

    Climbing Plants

    • Place a trellis behind your mailbox post and plant a few climbing plants to enhance the look of your curbside mailbox. Morning glories, climbing roses, wisteria and sweet peas all are examples of climbing plants. Alternately, plant a few climbing plants around the base of your mailbox post and allow them to climb up the post toward the mailbox. Combine climbing plants with a traditional flower garden for a different look.

    Rock Garden

    • An artful arrangement of attractive stones or rocks might improve the visual appearance of your curbside mailbox. Arrange border stones around the area to contain your rock garden. Choose a color of stone that coordinates with the color of your home for a more striking look. Select a variety of large and small rocks. Arrange them within your rock border. Plant ground cover, such as moss or rosemary, to add visual flair to your rock arrangement.

    Paint

    • A fresh coat of paint can improve the appearance of your mailbox and the post it rests on. Choose a shade that coordinates with the color of your home or the colors of the flowers or rocks you are using in your landscaping. A bright white color coordinates with most homes. Paint the box and post with two coats of paint, allowing the first to dry completely before applying the second. Use one color on the box and a second color on the post as another way to add visual appeal to your curbside mailbox.
