Atlanta Landscaping Ideas

Atlanta Georgia is a city that is beaming with life. Thousands of plants, flowers and shrubs grow well in Atlanta soils. You can plant both non-native and native plants in your yard, but native varieties tend to do best. Most Georgia plants thrive in moist nutrient dense soil. If the soil is too compact, till the ground up to 15 inches deep and add compost or chicken manure to give the soil a boost. You can also blend compost and fertilizer as well.
  1. Shrub Privacy Fence

    • A privacy fence comes in handy in the city of Atlanta. However, installing a traditional fence isn't always cost effective. You can create privacy by planting tall native Georgia shrubs along the outer border of your yard. Choose native shrubs that grow tall such as the Mayberry shrub. This plant can grow up to 15 feet tall and eight feet wide. Prune your shrub and provide this plant with full sunshine. Watering is usually not needed unless there is a drought. The buttonbush is another native Georgia plant that can also serve as a privacy fence. This shrub produces round spike-like flowers and dark green foliage. The buttonbush can grow up to 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide. This large shrub enjoys moist well-drained soils.

    Decorative Shrubs

    • Decorative shrubs also add more depth to an Atlanta landscape. Plant small shrubs along your front yard walking path or place them in your back yard garden. The strawberry bush is a small shrub that can grow 3 to 5 feet tall and 5 feet wide. This shrub has light green leaves and yellow flowers that blossom in the summer. Red fruit is also seen in the fall, but this fruit is non-edible. Plant your shrub in moist soil. Other non-native shrubs such rosemary also grow well in Atlanta.

    Trees

    • Trees can also add more visual appeal to an Atlanta landscape. Choose native or non-native species that grow well in the area. Silverbell and Wax myrtle are two native Georgia trees that thrive in the moist soils of Atlanta. Plant one or two trees in your yard depending on the available space. Silverbell trees can grow up to 30 feet high and wax myrtles generally grow about 20 feet tall. The silverbell has yellowish green foliage and pink bell-shaped flowers in the spring and summer. The wax myrtle produces blue berries in the fall.
