How to Make a Garden Arch

An arch created using branches and twigs adds a graceful element to the backyard garden, while providing height and a natural complement to flowers and trees. This is a good weekend project and requires few special skills or supplies. Get the whole family involved in gathering twigs. Once the basic arch frame is securely in place, the twig placement design can be enhanced with planted clematis vines, morning glory, sweet peas or climbing rose bushes.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area planned for the garden arch and mark the support sites with rocks. The two side supports will be 3 feet apart, and the arch opening will be 3 feet wide.

    • 2

Bury the four 7-foot long support branches 6 inches deep, by digging holes with the shovel and tightly packing the dirt around the branches.

    • 3

To make the top of the archway, attach the 3-foot branches to the supports by winding the stainless steel wire around where they join.

    • 4

Bundle groups of twigs together and attach the bundles to the side supports, in a criss cross design, with the wire.

    • 5

Cover all exposed wire with lengths of tied jute.

    • 6

Plant climbing vines and flowers at the bases of the arch sides.
