How to Install an Asphalt Driveway

A driveway leading to your house or garage is an important part of your home's exterior. It is the path that welcomes visitors and shows them the way inside. Driveways are sometimes made from decorative stone, bricks or cobblestones. However, if you want to achieve a smooth and even look, pave your driveway with asphalt. The final appearance is dark, smooth and visually appealing. If you want a functional driveway that adapts to its surroundings, install an asphalt driveway.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the area you want to turn into a driveway. Be very precise and use spray paint or chalk to draw the exact outline. Have in mind the width of your vehicle and various other factors like obstacles, the nearby landscape and the entrance to determine the best size and shape of your driveway.

    • 2

Measure the final shape of your driveway in order to calculate the exact square footage. This way, you can gauge how much asphalt you'll need to cover the area.

    • 3

Find local contractors that lay asphalt and ask them to estimate a price for your driveway. Tell them the exact area of asphalt needed in order to get a precise estimate. Check a variety of contractors and their prices before you make your decision. Note that factors such as their guarantee, pathway finish, thickness and additional services are also important, so don’t base your decision solely on price. It is important to specify that the contractor needs to check for valves, underground cables, water and gas piping and then reinstall and configure them if necessary.

Prepare the area of your future driveway for laying the tar. Remove any plants, rocks and other obstacles from the area. Even out the surface with a shovel, then pour a 4-inch layer of gravel to cover the whole area. On top of the gravel, pour a 4- to 6-inch layer of hot tar.

    • 5

Arrange for the contractor to come when the tar has settled and cooled off, which means at least 24 hours after spreading it. Make sure the contractor comes when the weather is at least 60 degrees F. When the weather is warm, the asphalt will harden in a shorter period of time so your driveway could be ready in less than a day.

Allow the asphalt to settle and cure for as long the contractor suggests. After a year, apply a coat of quality coal-tar based sealer to prevent cracks. If the asphalt has been installed properly, it may last up to 40 years with very little maintenance.
