Mark the area for the walkway. You may choose to do a free hand design with spray paint. Because you are using pavers you don't need to be precise. If you plan to line the walkway with some type of edging, use a tape measure and mark the area with wooden spikes and string.
Dig out the marked off area 2 inches deeper than the height of the pavers. For example, if the pavers are 2 inches tall, dig 4 inches deep.
Fill the hole 2 inches deep with sand. Use a rake to smooth out the sand. Use a level to help keep it as level as possible.
Wet the sand with a garden hose, using the rake to smooth it out as you go. Doing this will cause the sand to settle before you put the pavers down. If you skip this step, the pavers will settle more and soon be buried.
Place the stones on top of the sand. Move them around until you have decided on a pattern. Check each stone to be sure that it is level.
Line the sides of the hole with black plastic edging or other edging that suits your style and needs. It will try to roll back up, but simply set in place. After you fill the hole, it will stay in place.
Fill the hole with sand, rock or dirt. As you are filling the hole, you will need to hold the edging against the wall. If you are using sand, you need to wet it down again. Rock, and dirt needs to be walked on to settle it down.
Sweep the excess sand, rock or dirt off of the stones.
Spread grass seed over any exposed dirt if desired.
