Other Alternatives to Cement for Garden Stepping Stones

Stepping stones are a useful way to make an inexpensive pathway through a garden or similar landscape where gardeners and guests need a level pathway to move around obstacles. The most common types of stepping stones are cement, made either by factories or from molds that homeowners can purchase. If homeowners want an alternative look and are willing to spend a little more, there are several other popular materials that can be used instead, depending on the style of garden.
  1. Sandstone

    • Sandstone is a very popular natural stone option, as are the similar slate and flagstone. These types of stone are available at landscaping companies, where they are available in flat sections that can be easily embedded in the soil. These stone have neutral brown, gray and off-white colors that accent the stones in darker earth. Homeowners must settle with natural stone shapes; however, since sandstone and related materials are rarely cut into square or rectangle patterns.

    Quartzite

    • Quartzite is another popular stone option. Like sandstone, it comes in flat sections and is available from most landscaping service companies. Related to granite, the quartz stones sparkle in the sunlight, making them much more noticeable than the muted colors of other stone, which some homeowners may prefer for their landscaping design.

    Brick

    • Bricks are useful stepping stone material. If homeowners have bricks leftover from another project they can create their own stepping stones--if not, standard bricks are inexpensive to purchase, and homeowners can still create their own patterns and sizes for the stepping stones. Brick does take more work to fix in the ground than simple flagstones.

    Stone Pavers

    • Pavers are similar to brick, but are made of other materials, such as stone or concrete. With stone pavers, homeowners can have the look of stone but the uniform shapes of brick or tile, with the ability to form patterns if they want. Stone pavers come in a variety of sizes and may be embossed with designs.

    Poly Resin

    • Poly resin is a plastic material that can be molded into many different shapes. It can resemble concrete or stone pavers, but is lighter, easier to work with, and tends to be less expensive than stone and concrete options.
