How do I Lay Rudgwick Clay Pavers?

Rudgwick clay pavers are traditional clamp-fired brick pavers that have distinctive rustic colors and textures that make them look like old bricks. These pavers can be used to mimic the appearance of the worn bricks that are in older homes and cottages. You can repair an existing patio by removing broken brick pavers and laying the Rudgwick clay pavers in a pattern that matches the old bricks.

Instructions

    • 1

Pry up the cracked or broken full-size bricks in your patio by pressing the flat bar into the joint next to each brick and gently pulling sideways on the handle. Number in sequence the brick in front of any cracked or broken cut bricks and consecutive cracked or broken cut bricks using a crayon. Pry up the numbered cracked or broken cut bricks with the flat bar.

    • 2

Dig out any wet clay or mud in the depression with a pointed trowel to the depth of 3 inches. Use your trowel to fill the depression with 1 inch of ground limestone. Tamp down the limestone with a tamper or a brick for smaller areas. Add 1 inch of sand to each depression and tamp down.

    • 3

Measure the removed cut bricks with a tape measure. Select Rudgwick brick pavers that match the color and texture of the cut bricks. Cut the Rudgwick brick pavers the same size as the removed cut bricks with your circular saw with the masonry blade. Use a crayon to mark each Rudgwick brick with the same number as the brick it will replace.

Select full-size Rudgwick brick pavers to match the pattern colors of the full-size cracked or broken bricks. Press the full-size Rudgwick bricks into the empty spaces using the same color pattern as the old patio bricks. Tap each new brick down with a rubber mallet using a level to align the brick.

Locate each numbered brick on the patio and find the cut Rudgwick brick paver with the next number. Press each brick into the sand in the correct space following the number sequence marked in crayon. Tap each new brick down with a rubber mallet using a level to align the brick.

Pour sand onto the patio and sweep it into the joints between each brick with a broom. Gently sprinkle water over the patio with a garden hose. Continue the process of pouring and sweeping more sand until the joints between the bricks are completely full.
