How to Make Fancy Concrete Steps

There are many ways to add style to concrete steps in your backyard. You can add bricks or flag stones to the riser edges of your existing concrete, or stain the concrete in many available colors or combinations of colors with checkerboard patterns of light and dark, or dark on the risers and a bright color on the top or use concrete stencils. Add architectural detail to new concrete steps by adding fancy foam molds to the inside walls of the forms.

Things You'll Need

  • High quality concrete
  • Wood to build forms
  • Drill
  • 3-inch self-drilling wood screws
  • Fancy foam texture blocks
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Shovel
  • Water source
  • Float board for smoothing the top of the steps

Instructions

      Excavate your new fancy concrete step location, by removing anything in the way of the work including: existing steps, dirt or pruning back bushes in the way.

      Build wooden forms into the shapes of the desired steps. Screw fancy edge foam blocks to inside of the form against the riser faces.

      Add concrete mix to wheelbarrow first and add water second mixing with the shovel and mix concrete to manufacturer's specifications. For larger jobs have a truck of premixed concrete delivered to the site.

      Use shovel carefully to work concrete into fancy foam forms to make sure there are no trapped air pockets.

      Use the float board to flatten the tops of the concrete steps.

      Remove the wooden forms after the concrete hardens which will take 24 to 48 hours.
