Place treated lumber along the outside of the patio. Redwood, cedar or cypress lumber that is 1-by-4 feet or 2-by-4 feet typically works best. If you don't want to use wood, flexible plastic edging also works well. Push the edging material down into the ground with a hammer. Place a level on top of the wood to make sure it is even.
Spread 1 to 3 inches of coarse sand inside the patio area. Level the sand with a straight, 2-by-4 foot piece of lumber. Hold the lumber so that its side rests on the sand and pull the lumber towards you to create an even layer.
Lay the pavers down in your desired pattern. Popular patterns include the basket weave, the herringbone and the stretcher. Fit the bricks closely together using a rubber hammer. Pavers that have ribs are advantageous as they allow the bricks to fight close together, but also leave room for the top sand.
Pour sand on top of your finished paver pattern. Work the sand in between the pavers with a broom. Repeat this process in about a week, as foot traffic and wind can cause the newly placed sand to wear off.
