DIY Small Gravel Crusher

Miners used to crush gravel into fine pieces in an attempt to find gold. Although that could be your reason for crushing gravel, you may also need to alter large pieces of gravel into smaller pieces for use in the yard, garden or driveway. While a small, do-it-yourself gravel crusher will require a bit of muscle and time to use, it is fortunately a very easy mechanism to build. As long as the amount of gravel to crush is small, you needn't worry about straining yourself crushing it in this manner.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Mix the cement and pour it into the capped iron 4-inch pipe to near the top of the rim.

    • 2

Insert the rod into the cement and stabilize using a C-clamp attached to the rod and laid on top of the pipe, to ensure the rod dries in a vertical position. Allow to dry for 24 hours.

    • 3

Dig a 2-foot hole in the ground with the post-hole digger. Use a bar level to determine the sides of the hole are vertical. Place the second capped pipe in the hole, cap-side down.

    • 4

Fill the pipe in the ground with gravel about three-quarters of the way full.

    • 5

Crush the gravel in the pipe by using the cement-filled pipe and rod as a piston to drive its weight down on top of the gravel and grind it against the bottom and sides of the pipe in the ground.

Remove the pipe from the ground to empty, and repeat Steps 4 and 5 to crush more gravel.
