Place the stones along the path being created. Walk on them, noting the ease or difficulty of stepping from one stone to another. Rearrange the stones as necessary.
Cut around the edges of each stone with a long-handled spade. Set each stone aside after etching its outline into the ground.
Remove grass and dirt from the stone's outline using a hand trowel. Dig an area equal to the depth of the stepping stone.
Spread a few inches of builder's sand into the hole to level it out.
Place the stepping stone into the hole. Use a level to ensure it is evenly placed. Add or remove sand if necessary.
