Outline the path location with wooden stakes and string.
Excavate the path location with a spade so that the path is three inches below the surface of the ground. Smooth the excavated area with the back of a rake.
Dig trenches with a spade along both sides of the path so that the trenches are two inches deeper than the excavated path. Level the bottom of the trenches.
Place a brick paver vertically in each trench to test the depth. Adjust the trench depth with a spade if the paver stands more than three inches above the ground. Remove the paver and set it aside.
Lay landscaping fabric over the entire excavated path so that the fabric overlaps into the trenches a few inches. Overlay each section of landscaping fabric by six inches.
Fill the trenches by setting paving bricks side by side in the trenches so they stand vertically with no gaps between them. Pack soil around the pavers with a garden trowel. Adjust the paver height as needed by adding or removing soil with a garden trowel.
Pour loose fill material on top of the landscaping fabric in the excavated path location. Level it with a rake.
Tap the inside faces of the brick pavers with a rubber mallet to help them settle into the soil.
