How to Pave Stone Walks

When people visit your home, having a defined pathway to your door is a wise idea. This will keep people off of your grass and make your house seem more welcoming. Having a stone walk installed is pricey, but if you do it yourself, you'll only have to pay for the materials and you'll gain the fun experience of completing a do-it-yourself project.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide where you want to place your paving stones and map out the perimeter of the area with wood stakes. Dig out this perimeter, removing the soil. Dig down 6 inches plus the height equal to your pave stones.

    • 2

Cover the entire dug-out area with filter fabric. Cover the fabric with a 4-inch layer of gravel. Cover the layer of gravel and fabric with a 2-inch layer of dry sand.

    • 3

Place the pave stones on the layer of sand. Cut pavers when needed by scoring the stone with a chisel and then snapping it in half with a rubber mallet.

    • 4

Pour dry sand over the pavers. Push the sand into the spaces of the installed pave stones. Add more sand until the joints and cracks are completely filled.

    • 5

Spray the pave stones and sand with water. Avoid spraying them directly, however, as this can remove the sand. The wet sand will start to sink down in the joints and cracks. Add more sand and fill them back up using a broom. Spray them with water again. Repeat this step as many times as it takes until the wet sand won't sink and the joints are tight and secure.
