How to Make Flagstone From Molds

Flagstone walkways are alternatives to dirt paths or paved sidewalks in yards and gardens. Finding a supply of perfect flagstones can be time consuming and expensive. It is much faster and easier to make your own out of a mold. Many companies sell flexible flagstone molds, which can be filled with cement and peeled off when the flagstone has hardened.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Spray a thin coat of mold release into the mold. It should coat the entire inner surface, but not be so thick that drips form. This will ensure the finished flagstone does not stick to the mold.

    • 2

Mix the cement according to the instructions on the package. It is easier to add water to the mixing bucket, then sprinkle cement powder into the water until you have the proper proportions. If the bag of cement does not offer mixing instructions, pour amounts of cement powder into the water until it looks like a dry river bed. Mix the cement once all of the powder has been added.

    • 3

Brush a coat of cement into the nooks and crannies of the mold, then pour the rest into the mold. Tap the sides of the mold to release any trapped air bubbles, which will rise to the top and pop.

    • 4

Set the mold on a level surface and allow the cement to harden. This may take several hours to all night, depending on the type of cement and size of the flagstones.

    • 5

Remove the flagstone from the mold. If the mold is made of silicone or rubber, it will simply peel off of the flagstone. If it is made of plastic, you must flex the mold until the flagstone loosens enough to remove.

Allow the flagstone to completely dry for several days before putting any weight on it. When it is fresh out of the mold, it still contains large amounts of water and is not strong yet.
