Laying Bricks For a Patio

  Measure the area in which you are going to place the bricks and clear all the grass and dirt to a level of 2 inches into the soil. Use the back of the rack to level the extra soil.

  Pour the sand into the opening and level the area with the back edge of the rake. Tamp down the sand to level the area.

  Lay the bricks in the sand. Start in the very middle so that the pattern will be equal. This is where the locking portion of the bricks comes in handy. The bricks will naturally align themselves according to the locks on the bricks. The locks are simple little grooves or tabs depending on the side of the bricks. Check that the bricks are level by applying the level to each brick. Tap the bricks with the mallet to level them.

  Clear the area in which you are going to place the bricks. This will require digging into the soil and removing it. Place the soil aside for reuse. Check that the area in which you are placing the wall and the point at which the soil will become equal with the top of the wall are level. Mark this area with a string and a stake.

  Start laying the bricks at the middle portion of your measurements. Remember that the first row of bricks needs to be placed 2 inches into the soil. Lay the first row of bricks and check that they are level. Tap the bricks with the mallet to level them. Continue this process until the row reaches the string.

  Back-fill the dirt and level the area with a rake. You may have to add more dirt for a few weeks because of settling.
