How to Fix Cracks in a Concrete Walkway

Cracks or holes in a cement walkway reduce the aesthetic appeal of the path and destabilize the structure. Repairing small hairline cracks or holes simply requires pressing pre-mixed mortar into the moistened crack or hole and allowing it to set for a few days. Larger cracks or holes need special attention.

Instructions

    • 1

Chip away the edges of the large crack with a hammer and chisel so that the sides of the crack angle down and away from the opening. The walls need to angle under the surface of the cement for a patch to properly adhere. Preparing the walls is the most important aspect of a successful repair.

    • 2

Clean out the crack with water and a hard-bristled brush. Remove all sediment and loose cement. You may have to use the hammer and chisel to break up larger chunks of concrete before removing the chunks from the crack.

    • 3

Moisten the crack with water for several hours. Do not leave standing water on the crack but allow the surface to remain damp.

    • 4

Mix the cement and sand together with water in a bucket. Combine one part of cement to two parts of sand. Add water to the dry mixture until it has the consistency of peanut butter.

    • 5

Spoon the mixture into the crack starting at the sides with the trowel or by hand. Press the mixture into the center of the crack. Smooth the top with a trowel to the desired texture when the surface appears dull and gray without any standing water.
