How to Construct a Wooden Walkway

Wooden walkways allow you to traverse your yard without leaving footprints in soft areas. They also add a feeling of rustic charm and ease to your landscape. Treated lumber is the only way to go on framing, unless your budget allows for redwood. When choosing the decking, pick woods that survive well with full exposure to the elements. Treated lumber, cedar and redwood are all good choices and come in the standard 5 1/2-inch wide 5/4 decking typically used for modern decks and walkways. You can also add a coat of stain or paint to seal your walkway, depending on the look you want to obtain.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the walkway frame in 8-foot-long sections that are 32 inches wide. Choose two straight 2-by-6's for the outside edges. Cut five pieces of 2-by-6's, 29 inches long, for each section of walkway you intend to build.

    • 2

Mark the two outside-edge pieces at 24 inches from each end and in the center and position one 29-inch piece between the two pieces at each mark. Drive three 3-inch treated deck screws through the edge piece into each end of each 29-inch piece.

    • 3

Lay out the frames end-to-end along the course you want your walkway to take. Place a 2-inch-thick, 6-inch-square paver under each corner and the ends of the center cross member of each frame. Attach the ends of the frames together with 3-inch treated deck screws. Use at least four screws in each end.

Install the decking parallel to the long outside edges, working with 12-foot decking boards. Start along one edge of the walkway and install as many full pieces as possible, cutting a piece to fit at the end. Butt the pieces up to each other end-to-end. Make sure that each butt joint is centered on a cross member.

Drive two 1 5/8-inch treated deck screws into each cross member through the decking. Ensure there is 1/2-inch of space between the rows of decking boards by using a scrap of 1/2-inch plywood for a spacer. Install 6 rows of boards across the walkway.
