Take a stepping stone mold or a pie pan and coat it with a release agent, such as cooking spray or petroleum jelly.
Wear a dust mask, eye protection and gloves. Mix only enough concrete as you need to make your stepping stone. Pour concrete and water in a bucket following the concrete manufacturer's instructions. Mix the concrete with a drill and mixing paddle.
Set your stepping stone mold or pie pan on a level surface. Pour the mixed concrete into the mold. Let the concrete cure overnight.
Remove the stepping stone from the mold by pressing on the back and sides of the mold until the stone is free.
Choose an area for your stepping stone path. Choose an area that is flat and level for the best results. Dry lay your stepping stones by laying them in their final locations on the ground. Let the stones set for a day or two on the ground.
Pull the stepping stones off the ground and set them aside. The grass under the stones will have wilted or turned brown, leaving the shape of the stepping stone on the ground. Remove the sod from the locations of each stepping stone with a shovel. Dig 3 ½ to 4 inches to remove the soil from each stepping stone location.
Pour a 2-inch layer of compactable gravel into each stepping stone location. Tamp the gravel until it is level with a hand tamper.
Place your stepping stones back into their location on top of the gravel. Adjust the stones so they are level by adding or subtracting gravel.
