What Is a Footbridge?

A footbridge may be a simple design such as the Capilano Suspension Bridge in British Columbia or a more complex design such as the Davenport Skybridge in Davenport, Iowa. Both bridges, however, serve the same purpose.
  1. Definition

    • A footbridge is defined by Merriam-Webster as "a bridge for pedestrians." It is further defined as "a bridge for people who are walking."

    Other Functions

    • Although a footbridge is primarily made for people to walk on, people may also bike or skateboard on a footbridge, for example, or take pets on a walk on a footbridge. The only limitation to a footbridge is that they are not made for cars and other such vehicles.

    Benefits

    • A footbridge provides a safe way for people to get from one point of a certain location to another. A footbridge may be built above unsafe water crossings such as a river or above a street or busy highway.

    Materials

    • Footbridges are designed using bamboo, wood, steel or reinforced concrete, among other materials.
