How to Install Landscape Lawn Edging on Crushed Rock

Lawn edging adds definition and style to a landscape. In spots where grass doesn't grow well, crushed rock prevents erosion and inhibits weeds. Whether using bricks, stones or pavers, installing edging on crushed rock results in a durable, stable hardscape that can last for many years. You can use edging to establish a focal point, line a walkway or to border a garden pond area.

Instructions

    • 1

Outline the area where you plan to install landscape lawn edging. Use flour or a hose to shape the outline.

    • 2

Use a shovel to clear a 4-inch-deep trench where the edging will be. Remove the crushed rock from the trench and place it in a bucket.

    • 3

Fill the trench with a 1-inch layer of sand. Tamp the sand with a tamping tool. Add another 1-inch layer of sand and tamp it down. Moisten the sand so it will harden to the crushed rock when it dries. The surface will provide a stable foundation for edging.

    • 4

Place your first stone or brick in the trench. If it is not high enough, add more sand to raise the level of the edging.

    • 5

Set the stones or bricks in the trench, leaving abut 1/4 inch between each. Use a rubber mallet to tap each piece firmly in the sand until the trench is completely filled in.

    • 6

Spread sand over the gaps in the edging. Brush off any excess and moisten the sand in the edging.

    • 7

Use some of the crushed rock removed from the trench to form a slight mound at the base of the lawn edging. This will encourage water to run off and improve drainage. Spread the remaining crushed rock evenly over the hardscape surface area.
