How to Unlock Pavers

Locking pavers are a boon to the home landscaper. They make the entire process of building a walkway or small wall very simple. Since the pavers actually lock together there is no slippage between them. It also gives the appearance of a professional job. Sometimes homeowners may want to move them to level the ground underneath or move them to another area. Since they are concrete they are reusable, but there is a method to unlocking them since they fit together like dovetail doors. One paver fits into the other like a puzzle piece.

Check the edges of all of the pavers. Locate the paver that will be easiest to remove first. This will be the paver that has the fewest connected sides. The fewer the sides, the less of a chance there is of resistance breaking the paver.

Slide the front part of the blade of the spade under the open edge of the paver. Gently move the spade back and forth and left and right. Do not start lifting since this might break the paver.

When you have sufficiently loosened the paver you can remove it. You will know when it is sufficiently loose when you can see the joints starting to separate from the other pavers. Carefully place your hands under the paver and slowly lift it. Continue this process until all of the pavers have been removed.
