How to Install Pavers Around a Pool

Creating a beautiful patio around your swimming pool with brick or cement pavers gives you an area to enjoy the warm sunshine in between dips in the pool. You can choose to design your patio out of stone, brick or cement pavers to create a custom look that will make your sparkling pool even more appealing on hot days. Laying your own pavers may be a physically demanding task, but it will save you the cost of hiring a professional, and that can make enjoying your pool all the more rewarding.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the edges of your patio with stakes and string to ensure you only dig up the part of your yard that will become your pool patio.

    • 2

Shovel the topsoil around the pool until you reach the solid soil beneath it to create a strong base for your patio. This level should be 4 to 6 inches below the edge of the pool coping --- the border around your pool.

    • 3

Apply a layer of paver base. Follow the paver manufacturer's instructions and choose a paver base that is compatible with your pavers. Compact, smooth and level the paver base according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 4

Start laying the pavers using your pool coping as a guide. Fit the pavers snugly together. Work from left to right and check to make sure the pavers are aligned as you work. Verify they will lay flush with the pool and create a flat patio by using a level. Tap the pavers into place with a rubber mallet to make them fit snugly together. Cut the pavers as needed for the edge of the patio with a masonry saw.

    • 5

Fill the cracks between the pavers with mason's sand. Spread the sand over the pavers with a push broom. Work the sand in between the pavers with a vibrating plate compactor if desired.

    • 6

Follow the manufacturer's instructions to apply the paver sealer. Paver sealer will keep sand from getting into your pool and clogging the filters. Reapply the paver sealer every few years --- often enough to keep the sand out of your pool and your filters running smoothly. Once the sealer has dried you can sit by the poolside and enjoy the beautiful new look of your pool.
