How to Install Porous Pavers on a Slope

Installing porous pavers on a slope can be a bit challenging. You will need to take into consideration a few factors such as rain run-off, the length of the run and the angle of the slope. You will also need to know whether the pavers are stopping on a level area or continuing on to it. Once you take all of these factors into account, the project is fairly simple. The key is to start from the bottom and progress to the top when you work.

  • Hammer
  • String
  • Slide level
  • Tape measure
  • Shovel

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the area in which you plan on placing the pavers. Find the middle of the width at the top of the slope and at the bottom of the slope and drive the stakes into the ground at these spots.

    • 2

Tie the string at ground level on the stake at the top of the slope. Tie the string to the stake at the bottom and attach the slide level. Move the slide level to the center and adjust the string on the bottom stake until it is level. This will help you know how far the slope is in height.

    • 3

Dig out the grass with the shovel. Make sure to go about 3 inches below the bottom of the grass line. Go over the area and use the spade to level the rises.

    • 4

Put the sand down and spread it out to a depth of 2 inches. Level it with the back of the garden rake. Start from the top and work your way down the slope.

    • 5

Tamp the sand down with the tamper. Start from the top and work your way down to the bottom. This will create a level surface.

    • 6

Place down the pavers, starting at the bottom. Start in the middle where the edge of the paver is at the edge of the string. Bump them up to the grass line as close as possible. Set them firmly in the sand with a rubber mallet.

    • 7

Continue laying the pavers in this fashion all the way up the slope. Make sure that you butt them up against the layer below. Gently tapping them into place will assure a lack of movement.

    • 8

Throw a layer of sand over the pavers when you finish laying them. Sweep the sand into the cracks. This process will have to be repeated a few times until the pavers settle and set themselves.
