How to Grow Grass Between Pavers

Pavers can create an informal and casual landscape in a yard, with stones in varying sizes and shapes. Allowing plant growth between the pavers provides an attractive effect, with many different plants making suitable grout between pavers. One of the easiest plants to grow between pavers is basic green grass. Grow grass between pavers for a landscaping area that will resist erosion and weeds while looking trim and neat.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig out the paver area with a shovel. Make the depth the height of the pavers and add 2 inches for the layer of gravel.

    • 2

Apply 2 inches of crushed gravel over the paver area to form the foundation of the landscape area. Rake the gravel layer smooth.

    • 3

Lay the pavers in the area, spacing them a variety of distances apart as you wish. Make some pavers closer together and other pavers further apart for a more casual effect or make all the pavers a uniform distance apart for a more formal look. Pound the pavers down into the gravel with a rubber mallet to seat them firmly on the gravel.

    • 4

Fill the area between the pavers with top soil. Make the top soil layer even with the pavers.

    • 5

Scatter grass seed evenly over the topsoil between the pavers, covering the topsoil with a thick layer of grass seed.

    • 6

Cover the topsoil with 1/8 inch of additional topsoil.

    • 7

Moisten the topsoil with the sprinkler or the hose. Do not water to the point of puddles -- only a gentle moistening is necessary.

    • 8

Water the topsoil in the morning and evening to keep the topsoil moist while the grass seeds germinate. Germination should take up to 10 days.

    • 9

Reduce watering to once per day after you see the grass seeds germinate. When the grass becomes 1 to 2 inches high, reduce watering to twice per week. Reduce watering to only during dry weather conditions after the grass reaches a height of 2 to 3 inches.
