How to Lay Flagstone on Stone

Installing flagstone on top of existing stone is not recommended, but it can be done as easily as laying flagstone over dirt. Flagstone is typically installed on dirt; if there is any existing stone, try to pry it up and remove it before laying down the pea pebbles. If the existing stone cannot be removed or you want it to remain under the flagstone, approach the installation as if you were laying the flagstone on soil.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay edging around the perimeter of the area of stone where you are laying flagstone. Steel edging is more durable and sturdy than plastic edging. The stability of the steel edging makes a huge difference when standing it up.

    • 2

Cover the existing stone with a 4-inch blanket of pea pebbles. Pour the pea pebbles inside the steel edging until the entire area is covered.

    • 3

Lay the flagstone on top of the pea pebbles. Lay the flagstone one piece at a time on top of the pea pebbles and fit them together like puzzle pieces. All of the flagstone will not fit together like a puzzle, but you can get it as close as possible by trimming the flagstone in areas where it is necessary for the fit by breaking the edges with your hands.

Continue to fit the flagstone pieces on top of the pea pebbles until the pea pebbles are covered.
