Solar Lights

• Solar lights absorb solar energy from the sun throughout the day and turn on once the sun goes down. The lights will slowly dim throughout the night as they emit light and lose their energy. Each light has its own solar panel. A number of advantages come with solar lights: They are easy to install, no electrical cords are required, they are easy to move from one location to another and they are available in many designs to complement a landscape. Solar lights do require at least a moderate amount of sun to light effectively. Most use LED lights as they use the least energy and emit the most light.

Post-Mounted Fixtures

• Post-mounted light fixtures are a decorative lighting option that can add to a landscape both day and night. Fixtures such as these that have hoods block direct views of light bulbs. Those with a mushroom-shaped top allow light to shine in a 360-degree circle over a path and surrounding area. Post-mounted fixtures with an angled top direct light to the footpath surface. These fixtures are available in a variety of styles, including antique and more modern.

Ground-Level Lights

• Ground-level lights are an effective choice for footpath lighting. Low-voltage lights are one option available. They are meant to spread light horizontally across a pathway and should be just bright enough to light a footpath for safety. Lights should not be kept too close together. Low-voltage lights will stay lit at the same intensity for the entire night, and they typically cost less than solar lights. Kits are available to make installation simpler. Low-voltage lights need to be installed close to a power source. The length of the footpath will determine the size of the transformer needed to provide power and the amount of electrical wire required.

Hanging Light Fixtures

• These lights include lanterns and other hanging light fixtures. Hanging lights are situated higher than other footpath lighting options, so they illuminate a path and the area surrounding it. The higher the light is placed, the less fixtures will be required to achieve the same amount of lighting. Hanging light fixtures are available in a variety of styles, from old-fashioned to modern.
