How to Build an Outdoor Patio Walkway

A well-defined path links a patio to a garden, a driveway to a yard, or any two elements in the landscape. Walkways can be constructed of many materials, including natural or manufactured stepping stones, cobblestones, or an expanse of gravel for a pleasing crunch underfoot. Use stone native to your area and add a graceful meandering curve for a naturalized look in the landscape. For a formal look, design a path with a straight line and symmetrical placement of uniformly sized materials.

Instructions

  1. How To Build An Outdoor Patio Walkway

    • 1

Plan your walkway before beginning construction. Choose the materials, location, width, curvature, and starting and stopping points for the path. Use a garden hose or spray marking paint to outline the path in your yard.

    • 2

Using a shovel, excavate your walkway to a depth of 8 inches. Lay a 6-inch base of gravel and even it out with a rake. Top it with 2 inches of sand.

    • 3

If your path will be made of gravel, cover the sand with heavy-duty landscape fabric to keep weeds from sprouting. Use landscape spikes to hold the fabric in place.

    • 4

Arrange the stepping stones in a pleasing pattern, making sure they are level.

If gravel will be used instead of stepping stones, spread a 2-inch layer of 1/4- to 3/4-inch gravel on top of the landscape fabric.

    • 5

Spread gravel, sand or mulch in the spaces around the stepping stones. Alternately, add a layer of soil and creeping plants, hardy herbs or perennials to fill in between the stones.
