How to Make a Walkway With Sandstone

Sandstone can be a unique and beautiful stone to use for your walkway. It comes in a wide variety of colors and can be just as durable and long lasting as other types of stone. If your walkway leads directly to a doorway, it should be straight and about 48 inches wide to allow two people to walk side by side. If your walkway will lead through the garden or be used more casually, 30 to 36 inches wide is fine, and you can add curves for a meandering effect.

Instructions

Dig out the pathway using a shovel to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. This will allow for a 4-inch layer of gravel and a 2-inch layer of sand. If you live in an area where the ground freezes in winter, pour in a 6-inch layer of gravel before the sand. Check that the ground is level as required, using the laser level. You may want to keep the center of the walkway slightly higher than the sides to allow for water drainage.

Lay the gravel. Pour the gravel evenly over the excavated area, checking that it is level and spreading it around with a rake. Top the gravel with the landscaping cloth. This will help prevent weeds and grass from growing up through the stones. It will also keep the sand from seeping down through the gravel. Add a 2-inch layer of sand on top of the landscaping cloth, again checking the level and making the center slightly higher, if desired.

Arrange the sandstone pavers over the sand. Check that they are level using the laser level. Nestle them down in the sand if they are too high, and pile the sand up underneath each stone if it is too low.

Top with sand. Pour sand over top of the stones and sweep it so it goes in between them. Spray lightly with water and let dry. Repeat this several times until the sand is level with the sandstones and is compact. The sand will also help prevent weeds and grass from growing between the stones.
