How to Repair an Artificial Flagstone Walkway With a Crack in the Cement

A walkway made from artificial flagstone and cement can last for many years. Repairing cracks in the concrete improves the look of the walkway, prevents further damage from water intrusion and removes a potential trip hazard. Once the crack is repaired, sealing the surface and hosing off sand after winter snow will help prevent further damage.

Instructions

  1. Repair Cracks Between Artificial Flagstones

    • 1

Use a hose and a stiff hand brush to clean the crack of any dirt and debris, taking care not to damage the artificial flagstones.

    • 2

Use a cold chisel to expand the crack into the shape of a V that is about 1 1/2 inches wide at the top and 1 inch deep, and remove any new debris left behind.

    • 3

Measure the depth of the hole, and pour fine-grained sand into the crack until it is about 1/2 inch from the walkway surface.

    • 4

Mix a small amount of cement until the mixture is stiff enough to keep the shape of a ball.

    • 5

Add water to the crack, the sand in the crack and the immediate area surrounding the crack in the concrete. Spread the cement mixture into the crack with a caulking gun or putty knife, depending on how wide the hole is.

    • 6

Gently tamp the surface of the new cement to pack it into the crack, and then scrape off any excess cement. Wait about 2 hours for the cement to dry, then spray the new cement with more water.

    • 7

Cover the repaired cement with plastic and avoid walking on it for three days. Water the area around the cement twice a day to increase the longevity of the repair.

    Repair Cracks in Artificial Flagstones

    • 8

Clean the entire surface of the walkway if the crack is in the artificial stones. Use a cement floor cleaning solution and a scrub brush. Wear goggles when working with the cleaning solutions to protect your eyes from splatters. Wash off the surface with a hose and step away for at least a day so it can dry completely.

    • 9

Mix a small amount of patch concrete with 1 part cement, 4 parts sand and enough water for a stiff consistency. Use a putty knife or caulk gun to pack the concrete into any cracks in the artificial flagstones. Scrape off excess concrete and wipe off splatters with a moist rag.

    • 10

Call the artificial stone manufacturer and ask for the exact name of the color of your stones, or if the stones are painted onto a flat cement surface match the paint color. Drizzle the same paint color or a combination of natural colors into a paint tray and stir the paint with a wooden stir stick.

    • 11

Cut upholstery foam into the size and shape of the flagstone you are repairing.

    • 12

Dab the foam into the paint to cover the surface, brush off any excess onto newspaper and press the foam onto the patched artificial flagstone.
