How to Build a Wood & Brick Garden

Combine brick and wood to make pathways through your garden. Use landscape timbers to frame a brick pathway to create a pleasing and natural-looking garden path. Preparing the base for the walkway is an important task in the building process. Take your time to make sure the base is level and well thought out. The bricks are laid in sand so they will be easy to maintain over time. This will also allow for a more natural look than mortar-laid brick.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area where you plan to locate the path.

    • 2

Mark the outline of the path using landscaper's spray paint.

    • 3

Shovel out the area within the outline of the path to a depth of 6 to 8 inches.

    • 4

Fill the dug-out path with sand to a depth of 4 to 6 inches.

    • 5

Pack and level the sand by striking it evenly with a soil tamper.

    • 6

Lay the landscape timbers end to end lengthwise along each edge of the path. Measure, mark and cut any that require trimming using a miter saw and lay them in place.

    • 7

Start at one end of the path and lay the bricks flat in rows until you reach the opposite end of the path. The bricks are laid in rows between the landscape timbers that run lengthwise along each edge of the path.

    • 8

Place a pile of sand on the path and sweep it in between the joints in the brick using a shop broom. Sweep off and remove any excess sand after filling in all the joints.
